The Location
Mavarcica and Ciovo
The apartments are situated in the tiny fishing cove of Mavarcica. From the balcony there is a stunning panoramic view across the cove, past the village of Businci to the Island of Solta on the other side of the Splitski channel. Mavarcica is very small and services are limited. The cove is served by an excellent beach bar which offers both food and drink to the needy holiday maker as well as the local population. But what Mavarcica lacks in services is made up entirely by the location. The apartments lead directly onto the beach through a gate. The water in the cove is absolutely crystal clear and extremely safe as there is hardly any appreciable tide or current. If you are looking for sun, sea and sand (actually pebbles) then this is an ideal location.
The neighbouring village of Gornji Okruk has a wider range of shops for day to day items and access to the local post office. Okrug beach, two kilometres of shingle, is one of the most popular beaches in the area, which also offers plenty of opportunities for water sports. There are bars and restaurants too, to keep you going all day and into the night. If you like to get off the beaten track you might want to try the Kava Beach at Slatine on the Eastern end of Ciovo. There are no buildings or houses around the beach so you need to take your own refreshments. TrogirTrogir is around 4km from the apartments in Mavarcica.
This ancient city was originally founded by the Greeks around 2,300 years ago, became part of the Roman Empire and more recently parts of the Venetian, Napoleonic and Austrian Empires. The walls of the old city are still visible in places having been originally erected in the 13th century. Today the city is a UNESCO world heritage site. There is much to see in the city from the Fortress Kamerlengo in the West to the St Lawrence Cathedral in the East with much between. The Trogir on line web site has more information.
It is not a large city with a population of only around 10,000 people. Nevertheless it is well catered for in terms of bars and restaurants with over 100 in the area to choose from. More information on bars and restaurants can be found on our 'what to do' page. It is also an excellent shopping centre where you can buy all of the basics and also find some of the latest fashions. There are many trendy shops to choose from. The fruit and vegetable market offers an economic opportunity to stock up on basic supplies. Pantan Beach in Trogir and Medena Beach in Seget provide interesting alternatives to the beaches on Ciovo. DalmatiaFurther afield to the North are the cities of Sibenik and Zadar. Zadar with a population of 76,000 is the main city of Northern Dalmatia. It has a long history back to Roman times. The old stone walls, city gates and many churches are significant attractions. Zadar is also an important communications centre with an internal airport and major rail links. Sibenik is smaller with a population of around 41,000. Sibenik is a much younger city probably no older than 10th century but there are still many buildings of interest. SplitSplit is the regional capital. It is the second largest city in Croatia with a population of 200,000 people. Like Trogir and Zadar it has a long history starting as a Greek settlement and later, from 295 AD, being developed as a significant Roman city. Much of Split's modern development occurred after 1920 when Zadar, which had previously been the official capital of Dalmatia, became an Italian annex.
Split is the major communications centre for the area. Major, air, rail, road and ferry routes all converge at Split making it the most likely destination for most visitors to the area. Diocletian's palace is the best known tourist attraction in Split. Some of the lesser known places such as the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Croatia; and the Mestrovic Gallery are also well worth a visit. The Croatian Coast and CountrysideThe whole of the country is available. Between the mountains and the coast the scenery is majestic. The coastal route down to Dubrovnik is as picturesque as any road journey in the world.
